Saturday night at The Grove in Anaheim California was the site of a very special benefit show that many companies, bands and people got behind. The show featured a whole host of Punk bands lending their names and donating their performance fees for the cause. The event was organized by Surfers 4 Peace, led by Adam Grossman and Joe Myerchin. Their organization started as a positive reaction to the terrorist bombing that took place in Bali, Indonesia at a night club frequented by visiting surfers. Victims of the bombing were fellow surfers, Steve "Webby" Webster and his surf buddy, Steve "Crabby" Cabler. “Crabby” was the only one of the two to barely survive the blast, but he is now facing mounting medical bills and a long recovery.

The benefit show started to become a reality when Adam Grossman picked up the phone back in December 2002 and started to call around to see what interest people would have in supporting an event like this. One of the calls he made was over to Team Goon Skateboards. Adam explained what his ideas were and they instantly said to count them in for whatever they needed and that they would help get the bands they were associated with to consider playing the show. The real power behind this show came when the record label, Finger Records that Crabby’s band El Centro is on, stepped up an said that they would put what ever resources they had to make the event happen.

There were 10 bands on the bill for tonight's benefit show and we found it a challenge to get photos of everyone. 5 bands were on the outside lounge stage and the other 5 were on the main stage. We were really bummed that we did not get photos of El Nada because the lay down a solid set and from what were heard it was a mob scene outside during their set.
Drain Bramaged & Arkham

For a February the weather was not too bad to be hanging outside to check out the bands that were playing on the outside lounge stage. Everyone walking into the venue had to go by the stage so it was a good way for everyone to get warmed up for the evening ahead. Drain Bramaged (cool name huhh) got things started with their set as people were coming in and Arkham opened things up on the main stage.

UNIT F

UNIT F lead by Mel Torment was next up on the main stage. UNIT F has been making a name for themselves around the local scene and has played many of outta town dates. They have a CD that is currently being recorded and will be looking forward to it's release. This was probably the best performance thus far that we have see from this up and coming act.
The show was completely sold out, TV, radio and various news media people were all over this event. As the kids began to pack out the place, a really cool vibe seemed to settle in and never left the entire show. Everyone came together in solidarity to support one of their own and to stand against this evil of terrorism that is in our world today. Punk rock music has always been about what is happening in the lives of people around us and this event truly made a statement about what we were for and what we are against.
Shattered Faith

Shattered Faith's appearance came as a total welcomed surprise. This band has not played in many years with all the original band members working on other projects. With virtually no practice time before tonight's show SF put on a show that mirrored their live record "1982". The sound was just as tight and clean as it was 20 years ago. We hope that this will be the start for more shows from this seminal band.
Yes, there is an extra block of photos here, that is because they are the editor's favorite band.
DI

It seemed only fitting that one of Orange County's mainstay Punk bands DI would be on this show to help support the cause. Fresh off a west coast tour, DI delivered up a best of set with Youth in Asia and Dying In The USA added to their set for the first time in a few years. During the show Casey handed out Bin Laden toilet paper and even began to wrap one of the security people at the front of the stage in it. Very tight set!
US BOMBS

Duane Peters showed up ready to go to war and take on the enemies of free men as he came on stage in a camo uniform. The US BOMBS really got the crowd's attention firing off song after song as large pits in each tier went off. With Kerry Martinez leading the guitars section, The BOMBS always deliver up a consistent show that makes you feel like you are listening to their CD's.
Adam Grossman reflects on the show, “We had a short amount of time to put together a huge event and it scared the hell out of me, yet with the support of not only the surf, skateboard and music communities in the mix, it took a lot of weight off my shoulders. After a piece of toast for breakfast washed down by a Rock Star, show day was making me feel good that this thing was gonna go off. As the first band went on there were already 1000 people inside, and I knew mission accomplished, that a portion of Crabby’s medical bills would be paid from the show’s attendance. Standing on the side of the stage during the show and seeing so many kids slamming and having a good time, I knew the time I spent on this with many partners from all the companies that supported the event had paid off.”
Crabby and El Centro

Then came the man of the hour, Steve "Crabby" Cabler who survived the terrorist bombing in Bali and came on stage to perform only a few songs with his band El Centro since his health is still not a 100%. He told the crowd about his experience in Bali and how we can't let this kind of stuff go on in our world. El Centro played songs from their new CD, Prohibido that is being released by Finger Records.
Pennywise

Now it was time for our headliner, Pennywise from the South Bay to take the stage. This crowd was not out of gas yet and every tier had raging pits with the one in front of the stage being the wildest. During their set Casey Royerof DI really got caught up in their set and bolted from the side of the stage and doing a Christ air into the crowd.
They played a Black flag tune, Gimme Gimme Gimme with Crabby joining Pennywise on stage for that one. At the end of their set Pennywise's entourage of close friends joined them on stage to close out the show.
RoleModels

Right after Pennywise was done on the main stage, The RoleModels who came all the way from Chicago to support tonight's benefit show went on. These guys lay down a tight set of what may be called "Punkabilly" yet we felt it still held a very clever Punk edge with driving guitar and pounding drums. As the crowd exited the large auditorium they could not help but hang out and check out this outstanding act from Chicago.
A special thanks goes out to the following people who made this benefits show a success and they are: Pennywise, Finger Records, Volcom, US BOMBS, DI, Shattered Faith, UNIT F, Arkham, The Line, El Nada, The RoleModels, and Drain Bramaged as well as the many companies who sponsored this event.
