The Summer Strummer at Bergamont Station in Santa Monica, CA

This was a really huge event. We headed to the first Annual Summer Strummer to catch some bands that’s are some of our favorites, like the Diffs, Agent Orange, and The Briggs. By the time we pulled up and got checked in the first band of the day was about to go on. OCD was the name of the band that opened the show; this band from Brea was really rad! The best I can describe what they sounded like was a cross between Seven Seconds and the Descendants. Now before we go on any further let us just say that we aren’t gonna give you a full on review of every single band that played, but rather just a few highlights of some bands that really stood out.

Next up that we saw were our friends, The Diffs. There isn’t much we can say for these guys that we haven’t said before, they are a great bunch of people who have a lot of fun doing what they do on stage. We thought it was cool that they played the Screamers song “122 hours of Fear” While Paul Rossler, keyboardist for the Screamers watched in the audience.

We had just saw the Briggs a few days before this show, so we were very surprised to hear a lot of the new songs and even the old ones. However, what we were surprised to see was a band of women talking the stage. Wait a sec...those aren’t women…that’s The Briggs!!! Ill just let the pictures speak for themselves….The set was great though, it was short, fast and tight mixed with a few new songs, but mostly older stuff.

Paul Rossler even played a set on keyboards with Josie Cotton and the Pussy Cats. That was a fun set. They played a Ramones cover and a bunch of other sad songs. It was really cool to be able to see Paul play a set on keys….She even busted out “Johnny are you Queer?” a classic from the 80’s.

We also got a chance to see our old friends Agent Orange! There is nothing bad we can say about this band other than they really don’t play as often as we would like. Perhaps that’s a good thing though, so people always have a craving to see them play. During their set the crowd even tried to slam, but security was trying to stifle the fuck. Through it all, the crowd didn’t give a fuck and kept on dancing. Security tried to stand in the middle of the pit to intimidate the crowd, but no one gave a fuck, it was basically a couple of rent a cop types trying to abuse their authority.

Finally we saw Susana Hoffs of The Bangles play a set.

This show was a lot of fun, sure we weren’t thrilled to see every band on the bill, but it was a very diverse set, and had a lot of great bands. We’re looking forward to next year to see what the lineup will be!
