Rain Skates Product Review

The first time we saw this deck was at the ASR trade show in San Diego a year ago and we were stoked on it. Here it is a year later and we run into Pete the owner of Rain Skates and he kicks us down this deck for a review. Pete stepped it up one more, he gave us a set of the Rain Skates Yellow Jackets wheels. This company is based out of Ketchikan Alaska -yep they skate there too.

Here is how we fully outfitted this deck:
Team issued Tracker trucks Six Tracks, Khiro blue bushings, Khiro riser pads, Randoms 1 inch hardware, Crooks rails, and Madrid Flypaper grip tape. In the wheels we choose to throw in a set of RocknRon's ceramic bearings with Grind King Rimms.

The deck has what they call a "hell concave", whatever it is called, it is bitchen. We found the concave to be perfectly fitting for the shape of the deck. The tail has a bit of concave to it as well and is angled a bit more than most old school shaped decks you find out there. The wheel base on this deck was a little over 15 inches. The 4 hole bolt pattern was the old school pattern.

The thickness of the deck was just as meaty as the decks made in the 80's and was very stable and did not flex. Now that the deck was fully assembled we could hardly wait to see how this thing would ride. The board was skated a a couple of different parks here in southern California.

The other part of this was the wheels. The Yellow Jackets are a 62mm x 40mm with a 7/8's riding surface in a 98a durometer. The wheels are made with a center set plastic core to them which made the ride really fast with precise bearing alignment. The wheels we found had a ton of grip with lots of speed -which tends to not exist with grippy wheels. One thing we found is that if you are a skater that likes a wheel that will slide easy on command, this may not be the wheel for you. We had to work at it a bit and still found that the wheel was still trying to grip as we cess slided.

For over all pool carving and skate park cruising this a perfect wheel -very smooth with speed! We have not tried the wheels on a ramp, but we have a feeling that they will be perfect for that application as well. We passed this deck around to a few different random skaters at the parks to take some runs on it and everyone was really positive on the deck, the shape and the grip and speed of the wheels. This set up now holds a permanent place in the quiver and is gonna get ridden often. For those looking for classic old school shapes that are handmade, give Rain Skates a try and we know you will be more than pleased with their decks. As for the wheels, we really dug them and with the retail cost of them at only $28.00 a set it makes it a no brainer to at least try a set and you too will be pleased with how they ride.
