Heading up the 101 freeway to Hollywood we got bogged down in massive traffic in LA (big surprise) due to a minor accident on our way to see GBH and the Circle Jerks show at The Palace. We got there just in the nick of time as the Circle Jerks were taking the stage.
Circle Jerks

As you already know the Circle Jerks pretty much rule - nuff said there. They opened the set with the song that best signifies the Punk skateboarding all out rage, "Wild In the Street" as the crowd yelled and skanked around the large floor. The place was packed out and the pit had couple hundred slamming in a counter clockwise frenzy.

Funny how 20 years ago plenty of critics said that the Punk scene would come and go in LA, yet tonight's show indicated how wrong the critics were. Circle Jerks are still as bitchen and as relevant as they were back in the early days when they played places like The Vex, The Cuckoos Nest, and The Olympic. Tons of kids showed up to demonstrate their rejection of the fake punk bands that dot the landscape today in favor of the true un-sold out Punk originals. The set they played consisted of, Letter Bomb, I Just Want Some Skank/Beverly Hills, Deny Everything, Junk Mail, I Just Wanna Destroy You and ending the night with Black Flag classic, Nervous Breakdown. Next time you hear of them playing make sure you cancel all your plans and go to see their show. Seeing the Circle Jerks will be a whole lot better than anything you may have planned on doing - trust us on this one.
GBH

Lightning does strike twice! For the second time in two weeks we were able to hook up with our friends from GBH and just hang out all night with no groms in tow this time. Just looking around the crowd and seeing all the young kids with jackets painted up with so many old school bands and studded out really made us feel that we were at a gig in the 80's. Great to see kids that have chosen to listen to the real stuff.
Their show was very much on par with the performance we enjoyed at The House of Blues in Anaheim (click here for that shows recap). The only difference is that this show had more of a wild LA vibe and a much bigger pit due to the larger auditorium. They opened with the title track off their latest release, HA HA which is now in better record shops everywhere. The set list was a collection of all their songs that have been released over the years like, No Survivors, Sick Boy, Give Me Fire, I Am The Hunted, City Baby Attacked by Rats and Alcohol.
The show was a total blast for everyone there. The only thing that we would criticize about this show is that the whole show felt like it was rushed, even though the Circle Jerks and GBH played their normal full set. The show ended right at 10:30pm which was way too early for a show to end on a Friday night in Hollywood. After the show we went with the guys from GBH over to The Burgundy Room, a bar not too far from The Palace for a few drinks. Next time that GBH will be back in the US will most likely be for an east coast tour. Thanks Colin, Ross, Jock, Scott and John Fletcher for a great time - you guys rule.
