Team Goon  Network

The House of Blues in Anaheim that is part of the new Downtown Disney was where Team Goon was at on Thursday March 14th for a show featuring The Damned and DI. This show was not like any other show at The House of Blues, it was a locals show. What is meant by that is local Orange County bro, Warren Renfrow of Cadillac Tramps and Manic Hispanic fame gets the nod to fill in temporarily on bass for regular Damned bass player, Patricia Morrison. Due to an illness in the family, Patricia was not able to make the current tour The Damned is doing. The Damned have been a favorite with Orange County Punks since the early 80’s, and now we have one of our boys on stage with them. Warren is regarded as one of the top musicians in Orange County and we were proud to see him representing the high talent level that has existed in OC since the early days of the Punk scene.

Continuing on with the locals on this bill was OC Fullerton mainstay, DI. Front man, Casey Royer has been part of the Punk scene here in OC since day one starting great bands like Social Distortion before settling into legendary band, The Adolescents. "Opening up for The Damned to a sold out home town crowd was just an incredible feeling", Casey would comment to us right before DI went on.

Some of the locals on hand were, Tony Brandenburg lead singer of The Adolescents, Steve Soto bass player of The Adolescents and Manic Hispanic fame, Eric “Arab” Groff long time friend of The Damned and organizer of The Old School Skate Jam, Eddie Reatigui World Cup Skateboarding judge, an assortment of people from the class of 1984 from Fullerton’s Troy High School.

DI started the set off with “Rock-n-Roll”, and then went into “OC Life”. The crowd went wild as Casey lyrically explained how living in OC is all a big game and how the rules work. In between songs the audience was treated to the usually banter that Casey conducts between songs (it would not be a DI show without the comedy) making light of how DI was better suited for Disneyland that competing amusement park Knott’s Berry Farm.

With the clock ticking on their 45 minute set, the band pounded out song after song with the classics like “Tragedy Again”, Pervert Nurse, “Hang Ten in East Berlin” and “Stick to your Guns”. During another break in the music Rhythm Guitaist, Chickenhead, threw out to the crowd some goods from their sponsor VISION Street Wear including a Pyscho Stick deck. The lucky guy had to fend off a barrage of marauders for the deck. Chickenhead even replied to the winner, “Hey you better skate that deck with all you went through to get it”.

The next song “They Must Wanna Die” was dedicate to Bin Laden for all the trouble this guy has caused. The crowd cheered as Casey blasted out this track. As the set was coming to an end and there was time for only one more song, no DI show would be complete without their signature song. “Richard Hung Himself”. The set was now done and Casey thanked that large crowd for coming out and the House of Blues for inviting them to perform on this landmark stage.

After a brief intermission The Damned took the stage. One of the best things about The House of Blues is that the sound no matter where you are in the place is premium. It was like listening to a CD. They played a great set that included all the classics, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat, Jet Boy Jet Girl to name a few. We could go on and on about the show, yet all that know this band knows how awesome they are. We just found out that The Damned will be doing some east coast dates of The VANS Warped Tour, so go out and see this original Punk act.
