As some of you may already know, The Adolescents have a new album of songs out that has been released by Finger Records. To celebrate this release Finger Records and Virgin Megastore set up a free in store show with the purchase of the new album. What a deal!

When we arrived at the block at about 5:00 there was already well over 250 kids waiting in line in front of the store ready to go in. I don’t think Virgin was expecting a crowd like this. It was nearing show time and the Orange city police were already called. It never fails to amaze me that even when there is a respectful bunch of people waiting to see a show, these kids are still seen as a threat and have to be targeted and harassed.

After all our close friends were taken care of, we had some extra wrist bands, so we decided to make a few people happy and give them the leftover wristbands so they can see the show.

The show started with Kids of the Black Hole, and the crowd went nuts! We were told that there was not going to be any slamming allowed inside, but that was far beyond the control of “security”, because once the song started the pit was in full swing with crowd surfers to boot. As the set wore on the crowd kept pushing forward, and since there was no stage, there was nothing keeping them back except for a few people trying to hold everyone back.

Hundreds of kids and punk rock vets chanting the lyrics to Amoeba while some slammed and some crowd surfed was how the set ended. Filling in on guitar for Frank Agnew was Joe Harrison from the band Wrecking Crew who is handling the East Coast dates. The Adolescents mainstay player Frank Agnew Sr. was recovering from knee surgery and Joe was recruited to help out with the tour until Frank would be ready to go again by the San Francisco date and beyond.

Offered up by Punk Rock Skateboards was a complete Adolescents skateboard that was raffled off to one lucky person in the audience. When the number was called the winner came running through the crowd stoked that he had won. Everyone was cleared out of the store and was instructed to line up for the record signing.

At least 200 people lined up to get their CDs, posters, and other Adolescents memorabilia signed by the band. This was a fun show, and a great start to The Adolescents North American tour, which will begin in Boston, Massachusetts on July 14th.

Editors note: This show was completely off the hook. This event was not some old school fest of fans from back in the day...sure plenty were there to lend support to the theme music most have lived with most of their lives, yet the crowd was overwhelmingly kids. This was a pure testament to the timeless nature of this seminal band....the songs they played 20 years ago are still relevant today and will still carry on well into the future.
