Thursday evening was the 5th annual Transworld awards at The John Anson Ford Amphitheater in Hollywood. Tonight the achievements of the people that make up skateboarding were honored. As we got up to the front gate there was already a huge grip of heads everywhere waiting to get in - once you were searched to make sure entrants did not have any stickers or other questionable items.

Once inside we see Ray Stevens of Skate punk band The Faction and Clay Wheels spinning some of the sic'st Punk tunes around - he was certainly the right guy for the job with no fake pop punk records to be found. The crowd was now slowly making their way into the amphitheater to take their seats for the awards show. The crowd was still pretty rowdy even after taking their seats - that's skateboarding.
The awards show started out with plenty of video of the past years highlights and clips from various Transworld videos. Just the clips that they were showing would make a good compilation video. David Swift, the editor of Transworld took the podium to get the evening kicked off with some words about the evening and the people they came to honor.

Don and Danielle Bostick, the folks that head up World Cup Skateboarding entered the stage with new Apple computers for the winners. The Bosticks announced the Would Cup Skateboarding honorees. In between the winners taking the stage the honoree had their video highlights shown from the various events and activities that they participated in, again, more great video of allot of the events we attended last year.

Below we have listed all the award recipients for the Transworld awards. Plenty of well cocktailed winners took the stage to accept their awards or accept them for others that could not make it. yet with all kidding aside, the winners were very appreciative of the recognition by their peers and the readers of Transworld. The last person to get an award was the Legends award that was given to none other than the Master of Disaster, Duane Peters.

Steve Olson

Duane Peters

Steve Olson took the mic to announce his friend Duane and honor him for 20 plus years of shredding. During which we saw lots of vintage Duane footage tearing it up over the years. Steve also took the opportunity to lash out at the people who are behind some of the skateboarding companies that are in it just for the money rather than the love of the sport and the way of life. As Steve formally introduced Duane as the award winnner, his band mates from Duane Peters and The Hunns took the stage and began to play. The Hunns are a killer band and the crowd loved the 25 minute set.

     The Hunns

During the last song bass player, Corey Parks, without the knowledge of the event organizers goes back stage and gets a torch and flammable liquid. She came back on stage breathing fire before running into the crowd to do it again. The people in the audience freaked as many cheered.

During the melee in the crowd a mother with 3 kids was seen running out of the place. It was actually kinda funny to see the security people scramble to figure out what they should do, yet by then it was over.

Now that all the commotion died down some what Duane was given his award by Dave Swift and Duane thanked everyone for coming out. The crowd was still cheering as Duane and everyone exited the stage. This was an awards show that no one would forget.

Following the awards show was the premiere of "Free Your Mind". One thing is that in the past we have not been big fans of videos since they seem to be too one sided and leave out the pool skating stuff. In just the first 10 minutes we had seen plenty of pool skating mixed in with skate park vert and street.

The video mixes all the skateboarding disciplines very well and is one of the first videos we have seen in a while that does this. All kinds of whacked out locations are used, good slams mixed in as well as some homeless dude that goes off about all kinds of stuff - he even spits when he talked and it lands on the camera lens, we wonder who had to clean that off. The video quality is first rate and is a video we fully endorse and recommend you go out and get when it is available. All in all a fun evening in which were out of there by 10pm and gave us some time to go cruise on Hollywood Blvd.
